About Choi
I am a musician and researcher with a unique background bridging Eastern and Western traditions. Currently a final-year PhD candidate in Music Education at a UK university, I also hold two Master’s degrees: Musicology (from China) and Music Education (from the UK). My Pipa journey began in childhood, where I was classically trained under distinguished Chinese masters. This combination allows me to offer authentic, high-level Pipa technique alongside a scientifically-backed, pedagogical approach to ABRSM Theory and Aural training. I teach fluently in both Mandarin and English.

As a final-year PhD candidate with over 20 years of experience in music education, I tailor my teaching approach based on your specific goals. For ABRSM Theory & Aural Students: I specialise in using the Kodály method to develop true musicianship rather than just "teaching to the test." We will focus on internalising pitch and rhythm, making Aural tests significantly easier and less stressful. My goal is to build a solid theoretical foundation that supports your practical playing. For Pipa Students: I offer bilingual (Mandarin/English) instruction for all levels. Whether you are a beginner wanting to explore Chinese culture or an advanced player refining technique, my lessons cover traditional repertoire, right-hand dexterity, and musical expression. My Teaching Philosophy: I believe in a structured yet patient environment. My academic background ensures a logical progression in lessons, while my musicianship training ensures we keep the joy of music alive.
