About Terry
I am Terry, a bilingual Mandarin-English tutor and a recent University of Michigan graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Biomedical Engineering. My engineering coursework and research required extensive use of algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, data interpretation, and structured quantitative reasoning.
I was born in the United States and completed six years of middle and high school education in China, so I understand both American and Chinese educational environments. I can explain mathematics in English, Mandarin, or both, depending on the student’s needs. I am patient, organized, and detail-oriented, and I emphasize clear reasoning, careful calculations, and independent problem-solving. I work with students on mathematics through GRE Quantitative Reasoning difficulty.

My math lessons focus on understanding concepts, recognizing problem patterns, and developing reliable step-by-step strategies rather than memorizing answers. I can teach in English, Mandarin, or a combination of both languages, which is especially helpful for bilingual students who understand a concept more easily when it is explained from multiple perspectives.
A typical lesson begins with a brief review and an assessment of the student’s current understanding. I then explain the key concept, demonstrate representative problems, and guide the student through similar questions. The student finishes by solving problems independently while explaining the reasoning behind each step. I also identify recurring mistakes and provide targeted practice.
My lessons are suitable for middle-school and high-school mathematics, standardized-test preparation, and quantitative material through GRE difficulty, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, and data interpretation. My biomedical engineering background helps me connect mathematical ideas with practical examples and teach structured problem-solving.
