About Caitlin

English Literature & Creative Writing Tutor, All Levels Welcome

Hello there! My name's Caitlin, and I'm a final-year English Literature with Creative Writing student at Newcastle University. Having worked as Editor-in-Chief of our university’s creative writing journal, Parliamentary Researcher in the House of Lords, and Digital Communications Officer for The Atlas Foundation across 22 countries, I bring a level of real-world experience that goes well beyond the classroom. I've worked directly with writers, policymakers and storytellers to develop voice, craft and argument — and that hands-on depth is something I bring into every session.

My time in the House of Lords taught me exactly what precision and persuasion look like in practice — skills I now use to help students write essays that are genuinely compelling, not just technically correct.

In drama and creative writing, I hold a Grade 8 LAMDA Distinction, alongside an A* in both Drama and English Literature at A Level. I use drama devising and creative storytelling techniques to help learners — especially those who feel stuck — unlock their confidence and find their own voice. My Creative Writing degree has spanned the analysis and devising of poetry, prose, screenplay and theatre, producing manuscripts for TV, film and the stage.

I currently volunteer teaching English to refugees, which has made me a patient, inventive and deeply adaptable tutor. I've worked with learners from early childhood right through to adults, so wherever you are in your journey, I'll meet you exactly there.

What My Lessons Look Like

Every session is one hour, and no two are quite the same — because no two students are either.

Before we meet, I put together a clear plan tailored to exactly where you are and what you need. Whether that's unpacking a text you've been struggling with, working on essay structure, or developing a piece of creative writing from a first idea to a finished draft, each session has a purpose and a direction. Over time, lessons build on each other progressively — so rather than feeling like isolated hours of work, we're always moving somewhere together.

That said, I follow your lead. If something comes up in the session that needs more time, we go there. If a different approach clicks better for you, we use it. The plan serves you — not the other way around. In practice, my lessons feel more like a conversation than a classroom. I believe you learn more about a text by talking about it — by wrestling with ideas out loud, disagreeing with the author, connecting it to something you already know — than by silently annotating a page. Close reading is something we do together, working through language, structure and meaning as a shared exercise rather than something I hand down to you.

For creative writing and drama, I draw on my Grade 8 LAMDA Distinction, Creative Writing Bachelors, and years of devising experience to bring writing to life in ways that go beyond the page. Sometimes that means performing a scene to understand a character's voice. Sometimes it means devising a moment dramatically before writing it down. It sounds unconventional — but for many students, it is the thing that finally makes it click.

By the end of each session, you will know exactly what we covered, what progress you made, and what to focus on before we meet again.
