I have tutor more than 4 students and they all get into good USA colleges. All students give me excellent feedback.
I start by assessing the current level of preparedness of the student. I teach by stressing First Principles as the three key ingredients for success in Math is
1. A strong conceptual understanding
2. Recognition of patterns
3. Speed
For Physics, these are:
1. Understanding of concepts is even more important as topics are interrelated
2. A thorough grasp of convention, units of measurement and terms and their definition ( as these can be counter-intuitive)
3. Ability to draw and read diagrams.
I also focus on correlating different topics with the topic under discussion to build context and make the subject relevant to real life.
I will not move ahead if the student is still unsure of their understanding. I assess this by routinely asking them to explain back to me what they've understood.
