About Paula
I am an award-winning Australian photographic artist, educator, and researcher with over 25 years of professional practice. Since 2000, I have exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally, developing projects across photography, installation, public art, and collaborative practice.
I hold a PhD from Monash University, where my research examined photography as an analogy for the experience of death and mourning. My work has been recognized through major awards and exhibitions, including the Wai Tang Commissioning Award at Museum of Australian Photography and two Highly Commended awards in the Olive Cotton Award. My artwork is held in public and private collections in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
I have 13 years of experience teaching at university level in visual theory, photographic practice, and contemporary art. Alongside my teaching, I have produced public art projects, curated exhibitions, supervised student research projects, and mentored both emerging and established artists.
My experience spans higher education, professional arts practice, exhibition development, public art, research, and mentoring. This enables me to support students across a range of areas, including portfolio preparation, project development, concept development, artist statements, exhibition preparation, and applications for further study.
Whether you are preparing a portfolio for art school, developing a body of work, navigating tertiary study, or seeking critical feedback on an existing project, I offer guidance informed by the realities of both professional practice and higher education.

My teaching is shaped by my experience as a practicing artist, researcher, and mentor. I work with students to develop confidence in their ideas, strengthen their technical and conceptual skills, and build a body of work that reflects their individual interests and concerns. Rather than teaching a fixed formula, I help students identify what is unique about their practice and support them in developing work with depth, clarity, and purpose.
Lessons are tailored to the needs of each student. This may include portfolio preparation, project development, photography, contemporary art, artist statements, exhibition preparation, or assistance with school and university applications. Together we look at both the practical and intellectual aspects of making art, considering how ideas are developed, researched, tested, and communicated through visual form.
A typical lesson may involve reviewing current work, discussing challenges within a project, analyzing relevant artists and artworks, and establishing clear goals for future development. I provide constructive feedback and practical strategies to help students move their work forward.
In addition to teaching students, I have mentored professional artists in preparation for exhibitions, assisting them to refine projects, resolve conceptual and practical issues, and present their work with confidence. This experience allows me to support artists at a range of stages in their careers, from those just beginning to those preparing for professional opportunities.
I hold a PhD from Monash University and am an award-winning photographic artist whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. My experience spans professional practice, academic research, exhibition development, and arts education, allowing me to offer guidance that is informed by both the realities of the art world and the demands of tertiary study.
Lessons are suitable for secondary school students, VCE Art Making and Exhibiting students, university students, emerging artists, and practicing artists seeking support with portfolio development, project development, exhibition preparation, photography, or contemporary art practice.
