About Austin
- What kind of experience do you have?
I am a fully qualified teacher with over 7 years teaching and tutoring experience. I am also a senior examiner for the Edexcel and OCR exam boards, which allows me to coach students in exam technique and how to make sure they don't lose marks.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I have an up-to-date DBS which is available on request.
- Where and with whom did you train?
My teacher training and PhD are both from the University of Nottingham. My doctoral research was concerned with producing molecules which could be used as probes to understand how certain enzymes work in cells and has application for cancer treatment and asthma.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am an experienced teacher and tutor with over 7 years experience, as well as an expert examiner for the Edexcel and OCR exam boards. I am an excellent communicator and excel in helping students to make rapid progress and achieve higher grades.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a 2.1 MChem Chemistry degree, Postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) specialising in Science & Maths, Qualified teacher status (QTS) and a PhD in Organic Chemistry.
- How much do you charge?
All tutorials are £30 per hour up to GCSE tuition, £35 per hour for A level Chemistry tuition and £50 per hour for undergraduate Organic Chemistry tuition.
- Where do you teach?
I teach online and at home, in students' homes and other public places (such as libraries). I routinely tutor students living in Southwell, Rainworth, Blidworth, Clipstone, Mansfield, Nottingham, Warsop and Ashfield.
- When are you available?
Weekdays from 3pm to 9pm and the weekend from 10am-1pm.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Any students of secondary school age, including Key Stage 3, GCSE and A level. I have also tutored adults for various work-related courses as well as some undergraduate students.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Key Stage 3, GCSE, IGCSE (international GCSE), A Level in Chemistry and University level Organic Chemistry.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Tutorials online are conducted using Skype and Scribblar (an interactive white board used by both myself and my student). I use various resources including animations that I have carefully chosen to aid students' understanding and recall.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
All my students have commented that I quickly put them at ease and identify the stumbling blocks they have in Maths or Science. I then build their knowledge and correct misconceptions. I believe that students need to get a clear picture of what they are learning in their head, and use structured questions to lead students to the answers rather than simply telling them, so that they are much more likely to remember them.
I include problem solving, exam technique and confidence building exercises in all tutorials, and so students make very rapid progress. I firmly believe that all students can achieve and drive students to be their best, all in a friendly and supportive approach that makes learning enjoyable.

We were delighted with Austin's professional approach and friendly manner. We would definitely recommend him to anybody. (A Level Chemistry)
We are very happy with the maths tutoring that Austin was able to give our daughter, aged 16 yrs, at very short notice, to help support her with her Maths exam. Austin is punctual, friendly and my daughter felt comfortable with him. Thank you Austin for fitting us in at short notice and helping Charlotte to feel more confident with her Maths. (Functional Maths)
Austin has been teaching my daughter and niece now for approximately 6 months. In that time they have moved from a D to a C and are on their way to achieving B's when they take their GCSE's later this year.Always pleasant and very approachable, Austin is very patient when teaching the girls and willing to go over and revisit subjects again. He checks for understanding and provides homework which they work through together.(GCSE Maths)
Austin has been teaching maths to both my son and daughter. My son has completed his GCSE's last year and gained a very good grade. He is always pushing my daughter hard to achieve the best grade possible. He has helped her to move from a grade D to a strong C. He challenges her to think beyond just the answer. He also knows her strengths and weaknesses very well. He keeps us informed fully and is very well organised. Thank you very much. (GCSE Maths and Science)
Austin is a calm and patient teacher, I might not of got the good grades in my maths and science GCSE's without him and I am very lucky to have him help me through my chemistry A Level! Anybody looking for that extra push to the finish line, I would highly recommend Austin! (GCSE Maths and Chemistry, A Level Chemistry)
My son has found the on line tutoring provided by Austin easy to use and we feel it is an effective and efficient way to access support in preparation for examinations.
We are very pleased with the tutoring our son has received, Austin has taken the time to listen to what we feel our son's needs are and has developed a very positive tutor/student relationship with our son.
I would highly recommend Austin and online tutoring. (GCSE Chemistry and Physics)We employed Austin for my year 11 daughter, to enable her to gain confidence and obtain a better than predicted grade in her IGCSE Maths. Austin is an excellent tutor, always reliable, punctual, straight down to lessons and clearly explaining the topic to be dealt with. He's very thorough and has a patient, friendly attitude, which my daughter found comfortable and at ease with. Would definitely recommend Austin for you tutoring needs. (IGCSE Maths)
Austin is very reliable, and very professional. In just a few weeks we can already see the improvement in understanding our son has of chemistry. He now understands the subject better and enjoys it more. I would fully recommend Austin. (A Level Chemistry)
Austin is a patient and encouraging teacher who instantly put our daughter at ease. He is reliable and knowledgeable taking her from a point of confusion to understanding. I would highly recommend his teaching. (GCSE Physics)
Austin has helped my daughter gain more confidence with her weekly maths sessions. Her grades have improved as a result of Austin's help. I would highly recommend him. (GCSE Maths)
