About Kristina

I’m an undergraduate student at the ANU, studying a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy major, with double minors in Social Research Methods and Gender Studies) alongside a Bachelor of Economics. While studying, I’ve spent over three years working in consulting and public policy, which has given me a grounded perspective on what makes clear and engaging writing.

I perform at a Distinction/High Distinction level on university essays across disciplines. I graduated high school in 2017 with a 96.95 ATAR, having studied English Extension, English, Modern History, Ancient History, Spanish, Legal Studies, and external Russian, so I have a good sense of what it takes to perform across a range of written and humanities subjects.

I tutor because I enjoy working through difficult material and seeing a student develop confidence in their skills. I work with students at all levels and all ages, including younger children, and hold a current Working with Vulnerable People check.

About the lesson

I offer a few services and happy to adapt to individual needs. As a minimum, I will review the curriculum and help the student break it down into milestones, tackling topical work every lesson. I’m also happy to prepare lesson plans and teach content.

Essay writing and essay exams: I can help at any stage – from figuring out the argument, to researching and structuring the piece, to line-level editing. I’ve worked across analytical, persuasive and close reading essays, and I’m comfortable with both the high school formats and the more open-ended expectations of university writing.

Reading and comprehension: this is probably where my philosophy background is most useful. A lot of students hit a wall with dense academic or theoretical texts, and the problem usually isn’t intelligence but not having a reliable method for approaching difficult material. I try to help students develop a good sense for approaching texts, distilling key arguments and integrating texts into own reasoning.

Public speaking and speech writing: I competed in public speaking throughout school, eventually representing my state at a national level. Since then I’ve sat on the other side of the table as a competition judge, which gave me a pretty different perspective on what actually makes a speech land. I also worked as an editor for TEDxUQ, where I helped keynote speakers shape their talks from early drafts through to final delivery.

Who I work with: I tutor high school students (including English Extension), university students across Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and younger learners who are still building foundational literacy skills. I’m also happy to work with students for whom English is a second language – I speak fluent Russian and basic Spanish, which can help bridge the gap where needed.
