About Luke

I have peer coached for over 250 hours across a 7 year period during my time at A Level and at University. I have mentored 2 students into full time jobs at a Management Consulting company. I have ran a student-led consulting company which included case study preparation for employment. I have formally proof-read 28 CVs, 36 Cover Letters and 19 essays so far (all graded 2:1 or above at University level).

I can tutor 17-23 year olds primarily (but am flexible to support GCSE students and mature students). I am able to tutor A Level (English, History and Geography). I am experienced with CV and Cover Letter writing and formatting, as well as University entrance preparation, incl. Oxbridge. I can proof-read and tutor essay writing and dissertations.

I have a substantial academic background in Geography, graduating top of my class and with First Class Honours from the University of St. Andrews (which was ranked as having the best Geography Degree nation-wide at the time of my graduation in 2019). I am very passionate about the subject, as well as English and History and have continued, informally, to read around my subjects since my graduation staying up-to-date with current affairs and literature. Before this, I graduated as the highest performing student in the history of my school (Shoreham Academy) with 3A*s (all AQA format) - including Geography where I achieved full marks in one of my exam papers - 2As and a Distinction in my A Levels, achieving a Best in Class in Geography (1 winner from 3000 students across 50 United Learning Schools). Not many of my peers went to University (neither of my parents did) and I was the first to choose St. Andrews. I understand what it takes to put myself out there, motivate myself and others, and get top results.

Other than this, I am an out going person having hitchhiked across Europe, done paragliding in France and couchsurfing through Germany! I'm also an avid sports fan, loving all things cricket, Formula 1 and tennis!

WHAT I OFFER

I offer a variety of English tutoring services, from English Literature to business English. I can teach spelling, grammar, writing, reading, vocabulary, speaking and also proofreading and editing services. I teach lessons to a variety of age groups, whether they're a younger learner needing help to read, write and spell, an 11 year old working on developing their vocabulary, a 16 year old doing GCSE exams, or an A Level or University student working on essays and dissertations.

Whilst I always tailor my approach to tutoring to the needs of the student, I generally follow a three step approach:

First, to build rapport to make sure the sessions are always enjoyable. Second, to master the subject matter. Third (if required), to master the format such as essays or short answer responses.

A LEVEL/ UNIVERSITY LEVEL ENGLISH LITERATURE:

For English Literature at A Level and University grade, I focus on the following content:

SPEAKING

In any session together, I would make sure that we speak about the themes, characters and general plot of any relevant literature to make sure that the student has a robust and nuanced understanding of the subject matter. If the student can comment on a theme or character, then they can effectively articulate what this means to them. In other words, they have had to reflect and process information and form an opinion about it, rather than passively digesting information. I find this builds confidence with the material, cements a deeper understanding of the subject matter, and makes it easier to recall for assessments.

I like to break down conversation (and subsequently writing) into a ‘PEE’ framework: the Point, the Evidence and the Explanation. I have found this the simplest and most logical way of expressing, at times, quite complex information. I used this for my own English A Level when I was asked to compare 3 text passages. For example:

Point: “Text A incorporates a greater amount of imagery than its counterpart passages to express the transgression of time, complementing its rhythmic tone expressed through iambic tetrameter syntax.”

Evidence: “In the third quatrain, for instance, the dynamic verbs ‘walking’, ‘glistening’ and ‘sang’ coupled with the adverb ‘suddenly’, create a semantic field of motion.”

Explanation: “Wilde, therefore, clearly embeds a more vigorous pace of time as we progress from dawn through till morning. Moreover, this alarming transgression of time is also reflected in the onomatopoeic ‘clang’, where we are awakened to a new day of civility.”

As a tutor, I enable the student to form connections between the broader meaning of the passage (higher level view) and the specific literary terms used to deliver this meaning (detailed view). For example, connecting the theme of the transgression of time with literary terms such as iambic tetrameter, onomatopoeia, syntax and verbs. This can be applied to poems, short stories or passages within novels.

READING

All exam boards have marks allocated toward historical context. Therefore, to achieve the required marks the student will need to read core and complimentary materials to build a frame of reference for historical and literary context. This will help reinforce not only the essential subject matter but build a rich appreciation. For this reason, I provide material pitched at, or above, the required level. Explanatory notes, commentaries and essays are also useful for building a solid foundation of knowledge.

Reading additional material is an ‘extra’ thing to do but is a real differentiator when it comes to the quality of work. Being able to reference the theme of escapism associated with Romanticism, or inexorable fear intertwined with Gothicism, in an analysis of Wuthering Heights, for example, will really add a lot of additional colour to the canvas of analysis.

To digest all of these themes I would strong encourage annotating as you read. Make sure to underline the key points, or call out the questions or observations you have in your head, as you go. It’ll form a library of reference points for you to process later and will heavily inform your thinking and writing down the line.

WRITING

By articulating your ideas and reading enough source material, writing your response to a question will simply be a case of channelling the things you want to say in a way that you are happy with. In this way, speaking and reading are a foundation for being able to reference the right information for writing an answer to a question.

Having an effective structure for writing essay responses will really pay dividend for organising your thoughts. It will make sure you dot the ‘Is’ and cross the ‘Ts’. I regularly give advise on essay structures to make sure that all of the points of a question are addressed. I also provide examples of great essay structures to use as a frame of reference. I find that having a clear structure actually condenses the time it takes to write the response, and takes some of the anxiety out of finding a way to address the enormity of a question. It compartmentalises it into little building blocks for you to run and engage with.

For feedback, I will keep in mind the targets of the student and tailor the advice to make sure they can meet and exceed their goals. I will track changes and leave comments in Word, or by pen if given a hard copy, and make sure to frame any feedback in a constructive way. This is all about the student and making sure they get what they need, and I will make sure to personalise the type and level of feedback in a way that meets their needs.

SESSION LENGTH

Each session would be 1-hour long (but I am flexible to meet the needs of the student and happy to do 2-hours+).
