About Thomas

Hi, I'm a 3rd year Physics and Maths Student at the University of St Andrews. I also have an extensive background in music, having played violin since I was 4 years old and I picked up a few other instruments along the way!
Otherwise I host a podcast and do Motorsports commentary, so speaking to people and explaining concepts in "ordinary" terms is something I have plenty of experience at!

My teaching experience has two main backgrounds; Music and Science.
In the science world I have had the opportunity to provide peer-tutoring to a National 5 Biology class as well hosting a lunch-time Science Club for S1 students where we explored the practical side (and often the messy) of Science! Since moving to University I have been a part of several outreach programmes to local schools. During these programmes I take small classes designed to expand the horizons of pupils who may not have been aware of the diversity of applications Physics and Mathematics has in the wider world. Not only do these classes inspire, but they also teach physics in a more intuitive manner than the SQA definition based learning.

From the music side of things I again peer-tutored a National 5 class, this time often leading the lessons as the department was understaffed. I also have experience with Instrument specific teaching; I have acted as a mentor at many junior ensembles and bands where my role was to take sectional rehearsals and help anybody struggling with a specific part. Finally, I have also done one-to-one musical teaching with both a Violin Student and a Music Theory student with both reaching their goals before moving on to the next stages of their learning.

I start with the basic concept, without the distraction of terminology or jargon. Through conversation and provocative questions we learn this concept and its uses. Only after the idea is understood is the terminology introduce, this way the student has an idea to associate to the new word and the learning has been split up... thus reducing the cognitive stress.
Additionally, I always aim to work one problem at a time, for example I wouldn't sit down with the goal of attacking a large topic like "Classical Mechanics". Instead I break it down into its sub-topics like Acceleration, Work, Energy etc. until by the end of the session the large topic is understood by assembling all of the smaller lessons learned, as opposed to an overwhelming flood of information.
Finally, and most importantly, the student and I work at the student's pace. If they are not ready progress, or do not feel comfortable then I'll go over the concept once more but this time in a different manner in an attempt to secure the learning. This way the learnt material is not forgotten the moment we start upon something new, instead being retained much more easily.
The entire approach is based upon communication and understanding between myself and the student, and as a result I often find myself thinking as much as the pupil!
