About Andrew

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been working with music in various forms for over 10 years, during which time I have gained extensive experience in the performance and composition of many different musical styles. My key areas of interest are contemporary music and jazz improvisation, but in the past I have performed in (and written for) symphony orchestras, wind bands, brass bands, big bands, rock bands, ska-punk bands, klezmer bands - any many others! I have recently performed with such renowned artists as Neville Staples (former lead singer of The Specials) and Carl Douglas (of 'Kung-fu Fighting' fame), as well as internationally touring jazz group Mimika and ska-reggae veterans Maroon Town. Some of these performances have been to crowds of up to 5000 people, at events such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, both the London and Cheltenham jazz festivals, and at the Love Supreme festival.

As a composer and arranger I have worked in an equally diverse collection of genres. My original compositions been performed across the UK, including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Bristol Southbank Festival, and the 2009 ISCM World Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. I am also composer and arranger in residence with Dan Rosen Entertainment, London's 'One-Night-Stand Big Band', and 'The Groove Giants' function band.

Teaching has always played an important role in my work, and is informed by experience in a variety of settings and age-groups. Between 2008-9 I worked as Graduate Music Assistant at Abingdon School; during this time I gave weekly theory classes to groups of students with varying musical experience, as well as giving one-on-one lessons in aural skills. In 2014 I returned to Abingdon as a part-time classroom teacher, teaching composition classes to 13-18 year olds - the GCSE and A-Level components of this followed on from previous tutoring I had done at Cotham High School in Bristol, and for the Berkshire Maestros county music service. In 2012 I took up the post of brass and piano teacher at Dormers Wells High School in Southall, and in the same year I became the piano teacher for Avanti House School.

Following the completion of my PhD I have also done occasional lecturing for Brunel University in improvisation, arranging and musicianship, and have recently begun leading music technology classes at Oakfield Prep School in Dulwich.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a full enhanced DBS check, as well as a CPD certificate in child protection training.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Trumpet - Chesham Grammar School (Graeme Hollingdale); University of Bristol (Simon Jones); Dartington Summer School 2011 (Paul Archibald)
Composition - University of Bristol (Geoff Poole, Nick Caswell); Brunel University (Peter Wiegold, Colin Riley)

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a full member of 'Sound Sense' - the union of community musicians.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Among my students are pianists, trumpeters and composers of all ages and abilities. I have one adult trumpeter who is a beginner but determined to perform at his 50th birthday, whilst I have some music technology students who are approaching music-making for the first time aged just 7.

Previous private students have also included university music students, teenagers working towards music college entries, and adults looking to fulfil specific musical interests such as jazz or baroque music.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Always enjoy what you're doing! The joy of playing, writing and experiencing music should be at the centre of everything we do as musicians, and if you're not enjoying it then something needs to change. Even scales and technical exercises, boring as they might seem, can be made interesting if approached the right way; have fun with it!
