About Oliver
I am a PhD student in Analytical and Environmental Chemistry with a passion for engaging people with STEM.
I am well aware of the barriers to STEM entry, and I did not enter through the traditional route. I initially struggled with a Science Foundation year at the University of Southampton, and was told I would fail. However, after engaging with a great and patient Chemistry lecturer, I progressed to the Chemistry degree programme.
Throughout my degree I achieved a first-class in every year, and then attained a masters in Chemistry. I was successful in gaining an internship at a Pharmaceutical company, and then received several offers for both analytical and synthetic chemistry PhDs.
I want other students to believe they can progress and not shy away from Chemistry, as it can be managed!

I am a big believer in learning the Fundamentals of Chemistry, as this then makes any question or topic you see much simpler!
The lessons will be a mix of gauging your understanding on the topic, and then building up from there to ensure you feel comfortable.
Throughout my degree I was heavily involved in teaching and demonstrating both A level and Undergraduate content, and I am published in Chemistry Education journals for methods in virtual teaching.
The sessions will be a mixture of talking asking you for your understanding, presenting key concepts, breaking down problems into components you recognise and helping with misconceptions. I will limit the Chemistry jargon I promise!
In the sessions I will try to use a mixture of formats to keep it engaging, so this will include presentations, some models where appropriate, some collaborative whiteboard softwares, and a mixture of MCQ, written and numerical questions for you to work through.
