Find out more about Shaamielah

  • Do you speak Afrikaans fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn it?

I was raised as an English first language speaker in a predominantly Afrikaans speaking home. I mastered the language as it was as good as my other first language. I saw the need for an Afrikaans teacher several years later when I taught at a school where the majority of learners were English first language speakers.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Antje Krog hails from an Afrikaner family of writers who is committed to writing the truth about all Afrikaans speaking people i.e white, coloured and everyone in between. She inspires me as a humanitarian writer and anti-apartheid activist.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

Wie nie waag nie, wen nie! Whoever does not risk/take a chance will never win.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It forms an integral part of my heritage and childhood. I grew up on the Cape Flats and have been inspired by Afrikaaps, it's humor and cultural expression. Generally, Afrikaans has allowed people especially in the Western Cape, to bond, tolerate and understand each other across racial barriers.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help students with the learning process?

Speaking and understanding any language requires practice, interest and knowledge of the language. Afrikaans is not that far fetched a language. It requires regular practice in speaking, reading, listening and writing.
  • Do you have a motto related to language learning?

Learn to live and live to learn.
Leer om te lewe en lewe om te leer.
  • Is there a specific experience that has helped you to increase your understanding and appreciation of the language?

I became a full-time teacher and took great care and time in the content I developed. Lesson preparation and researching content opened up a whole new world of Afrikaans to me. Living among non Afrikaans speaking people who depended on me to teach, gave me the confidence and eagerness to master the language.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I have experienced growth and success of approximately 10 to 15% among my learners. Children who did not have the faith they could excel, excelled. The learners' feedback have always shown success and joy at their achievements.
