English

I am always prepared for my classes but also have the ability to work off the cuff forming new ideas to keep my classes fresh and exciting. I like to walk the extra mile for students and analyze their needs and their specific way of learning. I strongly believe no two students are the same and teachers / tutors have to adapt to whatever works to help a student

  • When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

I have been a teacher in the formal sector for the past 11 years. Doing extra lessons and revisions as well as task completion help. I find one-on-one tutoring very awarding. My love for languages comes from my love of reading. Reading opens up so many opportunities and escapes to new worlds. I love sharing this with people and the possibilities are endless.
  • Tell us more about the subject or subjects you teach, the topics and techniques you like to discuss with/demonstrate to students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach languages, mostly. Afrikaans is my home language. Literature is priceless and the language rules in Afrikaans are endless. I am well prepared by being engaging, using prompts and leading questions to allow the student to find answers by themselves. I give methods or set instructions that the student can use, keeping in mind that each learner is different and unique.
  • Do you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you? Tell us who, and why.

I have a few role models, in primary school, I had a very inspiring language teacher Mrs Erlan, who had a different and exciting outlook on literature that opened a whole new dimension for me.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good teacher or tutor?

Being reliable, well prepared and charismatic to make a connection with the learner. Making summaries of a book and sharing them with students. Giving feedback is valuable information that should be used to make informed decisions with your learners. Understanding specific needs because learners have different and unique needs.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your schooldays?

The words from a student in class: " Mam why are Afrikaans speaking people, such negative people, everything is double as negative as it should be" referring to the language rule. He just could not get the concept of double negatives in Afrikaans. After explaining, he changed his mind - "Oh they are actually not that bad then"
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing at school or during your training?

Learners are all different, and sometimes even after years of teaching, I still have to remind myself of this fact. Challenges are if a learner gives up hope, engaging them again stays a challenge no matter how many years you deal with this.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

I love teaching in general, it is rewarding and keeps you very real. Languages in general are a gem waiting to be found.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I am always well prepared and engaging, love challenges and teaching is a passion, not a job.
