I worked with Anna on a project at the National Trust property, The Workhouse, Southwell which formed part of her final year at Nottingham Trent University. The project involved liaising with a Workhouse volunteer to develop a five minute performance of a story inspired by the Workhouse with echoes in modern day experiences of homelessness and social care. Anna was responsible for producing a first draft of the story, a cosprop made to my measurements, and a brief with her aims for the staging of the performance. It was a pleasure to work with Anna as her thoughts and ideas were clearly expressed and her enthusiasm for the project was infectious. Anna quickly assimilated the Workhouse history and was able to develop a strong design concept that used the spaces of the building and the themes and images of both the 19th century and the present day to produce a powerful and emotive presentation. Because she incorporated her ideas into the design of the cosprop, it was easy for me to develop my performance as the character of "Annie" even though we had limited rehearsal time. The main part of my role as a volunteer at The Workhouse is as a writer and storyteller, which is often quite challenging. It made a pleasant change to work with someone who guided me in the development of the story and character as well as the physical performance whilst still allowing me scope for my own creative input. The end result was excellent.
