About Niya

I'm a fourth-year biochemistry student on the pre-med track at the University of Virginia. One of my greatest passions is teaching, and I find immense joy in helping others grasp complex concepts. With three years of tutoring experience in subjects like biochemistry, chemistry, and calculus, I aim to make learning an engaging and rewarding process. My goal is to inspire confidence in my students and guide them toward academic success while fostering a genuine love for science.

My teaching method is centered around adaptability and personalized learning. I firmly believe that every student learns differently, and it’s crucial to tailor each session to fit their individual needs. Some students thrive on visual aids, while others prefer auditory explanations or hands-on problem-solving. To accommodate different learning styles, I use a variety of techniques. For visual learners, I often employ diagrams, drawings, and flowcharts to clarify difficult concepts in subjects like biochemistry, chemistry, and physics.

I focus heavily on breaking down complex scientific and mathematical concepts into simpler, more manageable steps. Instead of overwhelming students with the whole picture right away, I help them understand each component of the topic in smaller, digestible parts. This step-by-step approach ensures they don’t just memorize information but truly grasp the underlying principles and can apply them in different contexts.

To reinforce understanding and improve retention, I also introduce creative memory techniques, such as mnemonics and the Feynman technique. Mnemonics help in recalling intricate details, while the Feynman technique enables them to identify gaps in their understanding, making the learning process more active and reflective.

A typical lesson begins with a quick review of the previous session to assess how much the student retained and to address any lingering questions. This serves as both a refresher and a foundation for the new material. Next, I ask the student what topics they would like to focus on, ensuring that their concerns are at the forefront of the session.

Once we’ve identified the focus area, I start with a basic introduction or review of the topic, gradually guiding them through the more challenging aspects. The remainder of the session will be practice-focused, starting with guided examples and transitioning to independent work.

At the end of each lesson, we summarize the key points and create memory aids, such as mnemonics or written explanations using the Feynman technique. I then leave the students with a few practice problems, resources, or thought experiments to work on independently, ensuring they have the opportunity to reinforce what we covered.

Moreover, my background in biochemistry and experience with advanced mathematics allow me to bridge interdisciplinary gaps and provide a holistic understanding of how different subjects connect. This makes me particularly effective in helping students see the bigger picture, which is often overlooked in more traditional tutoring approaches.
