Methods and techniques: Distribute Questions.
This is a very simple method. After a reading exercise, students are usually asked about the text in question. A great way to get specific people to talk (particularly those who are quite shy) is to select them and ask them the question. This may seem simple, but it is something that many teachers forget.
Role Playing, the importance of role playing in the world of language teaching cannot be expressed enough. In these exercises I use it for the practical use of the language and, therefore, it will allow students to use what they know in a more creative way. They can usually be a lot of fun.
Finding a topic that is somewhat controversial could be good for stimulating debate in the classroom. An example would be if one were talking about, say, immigration, some people might be interested in saying what they think about this particular topic. I ask them about themselves. Everyone likes to talk about themselves. If one is teaching a business class, this will certainly be a great opportunity to ask what work everyone does. Perhaps you could go around the room and ask everyone in turn about their role and responsibilities. Since people like to talk about themselves in general, I will get a lot more conversation with them this way.
I encourage you to ask questions and I encourage students to ask questions themselves about various topics. For example, you could say: “And why do you think Sonia did this…?” It will usually be helpful to direct it to one person. Ask them why they think a particular verb form is correct and instill in students that asking questions will lead to better mastery of the language.
Resume. Finally, a very good way is to have students summarize a particular topic in their own words. This can be challenging for beginners, but can generally help them in speaking practice.
